Finding the right paper for printing your art is not easy, especially if you live in Hungary. We have very few options to choose from because the demand is low compared to the US. Most of the shops only sell paper suitable for traditional art, not for printing.

I spent hours researching the right papers for printing greeting cards, bookmarks, art prints, etc. Every recommended brand is either from the US or UK, where shipping costs, customs, VAT, and handling fees from my local postal service would end up costing me a fortune.

I asked local artists about the papers or brands they use, but none of them has responded yet. Therefore, I embarked on my own adventure. This journey is both time and money-consuming, something I wouldn’t wish upon anyone. That’s why I’ve decided to share all my findings and experiences with you! (Yes, I’m that nice).

First test subject: ELES VIDA from Amazon

The best paper type for printing greeting cards is called “cardstock,” with the ideal weight being 300gsm, and the surface being uncoated matte. It took me a while to find this option because, for weights over 250gsm, most available papers are either glossy or have a rough surface, which is suitable for watercolour but not for printing.

ELES VIDA had really good reviews, the description said it’s good for printing greeting cards, great folding, and it works with inkjet printers too (I have a Canon Pixma IP8750).

After giving it a try, I had to learn that this was untrue.

My images with darker parts were filled with white little dots. This is a typical paper issue, not a printer problem.

The blurriness is coming from my camera, apologies.

Folding was also ugly, I mean look at this!

The folding doesn’t look good at all.

The colours could work, but I gave up after seeing these dots and sent it back. Luckily, I got a refund, so I only wasted my time, ink, and the peace of my mind.
